Love… Thy Neighbor – Not Just “Bae”
“One day an expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus by asking him this question: “Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus replied, “What does the law of Moses say? How do you read it?” The man answered, “‘You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.’ And, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’””
Luke 10:25-27 NLT
Today’s message is about love. I know I’ve written a number of messages centered around love, but we’re back!
“Love your neighbor as yourself.”
- Who is your neighbor?
- How do you love yourself?
- What is love?
I thank God for His Word because we can always find the answers.
You can love someone you don’t like. Whether you like it or not, love is a choice. Love is a willful surrender to God’s will. – Pastor Richie
Who is your neighbor?
The Oxford dictionary defined “neighbor” as: Any person in need of one’s help or kindness (after biblical use).
In simple terms; errybody (everybody). Ain’t no limits to yo’ love (in English: there shouldn’t be any limitations to your love).
Here’s how I condition my mind when my “neighbors” start triflinggggg – I remind myself that I can love, I can be patient because we are one family. They are my brothers and sisters. You are my brothers and sisters.
How do you love yourself?
You know the honest answer to this question.
So why not put yourself in your neighbor’s shoes. How would you want to be treated in xyz situation? You want respect; do you give respect?
Take a moment to really think this through. How do you love yourself and how can you do a better job at loving others the way you love yourself. I know I’ve been doing a poor job at this lately but awareness is the first step!
What is love?
Question of lifeeee!!!!
Thankfully, the Bible gives us the best answer: “Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.”
1 Corinthians 13:4-7 NLT
Oya, highlight, underline, take notes. Now you know what love is. Won’t you look at that?
Let us pray:
Loving Father, teach us what it looks like to love like you do. Your word says that You are love; so help us to imitate you and reflect your wonderful image – just as we’ve been created in your image. We confess that we’ve fallen short in many ways, but we want to draw nearer to you and be more like you – so help us. God, we surrender our thoughts to you. Take control and renew our minds. We’re able to do exceedingly and abundantly beyond all that we can ask or think especially when it comes to loving our neighbors as our selves. Show us how simple it is. Thank you Abba, in Jesus’ Name.
“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.” – Romans 12:2
“Those who shut their ears to the cries of the poor will be ignored in their own time of need.”
Proverbs 21:13 NLT
“What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?” – Mark 8:36
Your Christianity is meaningless if you can’t choose to love.
Is that too radical?3
