Self Control- Josh McDowell

This was taken from Josh McDowell’s Daily Reading Plan

You may really, really want to be more self-controlled. You may want to control your anger, your appetite, your desires, or your fears. But no matter how badly you want self-control, you can’t make it happen. Oh, you may improve a little bit, for a while. But no matter how hard you try, you won’t develop true self-control by yourself. Because self-control, like all virtues, comes from God.

In other words, your ability to exercise self-control depends on whatever or whoever-fills you. “That’s why,” the Bible says, “those who are still under the control of their sinful nature can never please God. But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you” (Romans 8:8-9).

So if you are a Christian, the power to be self-controlled is already living in you-the Holy Spirit. The key, then, is not to grunt and groan and grit your teeth but to surrender to the Spirit’s control day by day and moment by moment-just like a glove “surrenders” to the hand that wears it and controls it.

REFLECT: You already have God’s Spirit living in you if you’ve received forgiveness of your sins and trusted Jesus for salvation. Have you done that? If not, you can do it now by praying this simple prayer: “Lord Jesus, I want to know you personally. Thank you for dying on the cross for my sins. I open the door of my life and receive you as my Savior and Lord. Thank you for forgiving my sins and giving me eternal life. Take control of my life and make me the kind of person you want me to be. Amen.”

PRAY: One way to surrender to the Spirit’s control is to sincerely pray a simple prayer every morning, like the following: “God, I want to do right today, but I know I’ll need your help. I give up control of the things I do to your Holy Spirit right now, and I ask him to control me all day long. Please help me not to forget or to ‘take back’ control.”

Shine Like Stars- VOTD!

Dear friends, you always followed my instructions when I was with you. And now that I am away, it is even more important. Work hard to show the results of your salvation, obeying God with deep reverence and fear. For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him. Do everything without complaining and arguing, so that no one can criticize you. Live clean, innocent lives as children of God, shining like bright lights in a world full of crooked and perverse people. (‭Philippians‬ ‭2‬:‭12-15‬ NLT)

Following Prophets – VOTD!!

When one of you says, “I am a follower of Paul,” and another says, “I follow Apollos,” aren’t you acting just like people of the world? After all, who is Apollos? Who is Paul? We are only God’s servants through whom you believed the Good News. Each of us did the work the Lord gave us. I planted the seed in your hearts, and Apollos watered it, but it was God who made it grow. It’s not important who does the planting, or who does the watering. What’s important is that God makes the seed grow. The one who plants and the one who waters work together with the same purpose. And both will be rewarded for their own hard work. For we are both God’s workers. And you are God’s field. You are God’s building.

Don’t you realize that all of you together are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God lives in you? God will destroy banyone who destroys this temple. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple. Stop deceiving yourselves. If you think you are wise by this world’s standards, you need to become a fool to be truly wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness to God. As the Scriptures say, “He traps the wise in the snare of their own cleverness.”

So don’t boast about following a particular human leader. For everything belongs to you— whether Paul or Apollos or Peter, or the world, or life and death, or the present and the future. Everything belongs to you, and you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God. (‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭3‬:‭4-9, 16-19, 21-23‬ NLT)

When God moves, You move.. Just like that.

So yesterday was special.

I allowed God to work and it felt awesome.

Two days ago on my way back from the train station I saw another homeless man who sat collecting change.

However, when I went closer to him, he said he just needed a pillow and some sheets. I promised him i’d get that for him…

Later that day, I took one of my pillows and my warmest blanket and headed towards the train station but I didn’t see him. So I thought, Ok let me pray about this first then try again.

Yesterday, I went out to eat dinner with a friend and felt in my spirit that I was going to see this man and give him what he needed.

Guess what happened..
I saw him.

I didn’t have the stuff with me so I went to speak to him and let him know i’d be right back in about 10 minutes.

So.. I went to my room, put the pillow and blanket in a bag and started heading right back towards the station.

Thankfully, he waited for me!

He was on the phone with his mom but told her to hold on and was so thankful.

So thankful that he asked for a hug saying “May I hug you? I’m not dirty.”

It was so heart warming and humbling knowing that God had started something new in this mans life.

Moral of the story:

Don’t be afraid to be kind to people on the streets. They need you.

Don’t judge them. They need you.

Lend a helping hand knowing that God would do the rest. They need you.

More so, God needs you.

Please please please, if God is telling you to do something, DO IT.

I’m not sharing this to get any praise because that’s the last thing I want. Be kind because God has been kind and merciful to you and not so the world can praise you. The worlds praise is finite.

Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it. (‭James‬ ‭4‬:‭17‬ NLT)

Pursue Her or Pursue Him?

Ladies,

Let’s talk.

So God commands guys to pursue us, but most of the time WE DONT EVEN GIVE THEM ROOM FOR THE CHASE.

We really need to chill.

I know, i know, i understand you like him and want him to know that; but do things the right way.

It’s not “old school”, it’s the way God planned it to be and his plans are perfect.

Let the guys breathe.

It’s ok to JUST BE FRIENDS.

Don’t worry.

God’s got you.

And if he is the one; God will prompt him to pursue you!

Trust in the Lord above all else!!!

Charm is deceptive, and beauty does not last; but a woman who fears the LORD will be greatly praised. (‭Proverbs‬ ‭31‬:‭30‬ NLT)

VOTD

“What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are careful to tithe even the tiniest income from your herb gardens, but you ignore the more important aspects of the law—justice, mercy, and faith. You should tithe, yes, but do not neglect the more important things.

“What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are so careful to clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside you are filthy—full of greed and self-indulgence! You blind Pharisee! First wash the inside of the cup and the dish, and then the outside will become clean, too. “What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs—beautiful on the outside but filled on the inside with dead people’s bones and all sorts of impurity. Outwardly you look like righteous people, but inwardly your hearts are filled with hypocrisy and lawlessness. (‭Matthew‬ ‭23‬:‭23, 25-28‬ NLT)

Bless those who persecute you. Don’t curse them; pray that God will bless them. Be happy with those who are happy, and weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with each other. Don’t be too proud to enjoy the company of ordinary people. And don’t think you know it all! (‭Romans‬ ‭12‬:‭14-16‬ NLT)

VOTD!! 9/2/14

Keep yourself in check!

“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world. For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.’ “Then these righteous ones will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink? Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing? When did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ “And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!’ (‭Matthew‬ ‭25‬:‭34-40‬ NLT)

Love is patient

God answers prayers

I asked to be shown what love is..

His word says:LOVE-14

Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.

Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love. (‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭13‬:‭4-7, 13‬ NLT)”

I got it! But I never understood it.

So I prayed and cried out to the Lord “SHOW ME LOVE! WHAT IS LOVE?? LET ME UNDERSTAND!! GIVE ME THE WISDOM TO UNDERSTAND!! PLEASE LORD”

Let’s be real, I was looking for love.

I wanted a guy somewhere down the line to show me love and I didn’t want to miss it.

But God showed me that I shouldn’t depend on the love of another human being. So what He did was He enabled me to show love instead of waiting to receive it.

When my mom was sick in the hospital, both faith and love overtook me. I had no control over it! Literally NO control.

I didn’t know I could show that much love and be comfortable showing it, but I did.

God knew I’d have a better understanding of love by giving it rather than waiting on a husband.

God moved me because I asked.

His word clearly says knock and the door will be opened unto you, ask and you will be answered!

God answers prayers and He has never failed to answer mine.

Morals of the story:

Don’t wait to be shown love to understand it, Instead pray to show love, and share the love of God.

Ask, Ask and Ask! Yes, he knows your heart but yes, he wants to hear you ask.

Don’t wait on guys (or guys don’t wait on girls) to show you love before you start showing love to others.

Let us love because He loves youuuu.

We ALL matter, No matter what.

Just know that..

Everyone is useful and everyone is a part of the body, therefore as long as you’re happy and doing what God ordained you to do, You should feel loved because you are.

No matter what the world may say, do whatever makes you feel great at the end of the day.

Do what gives you that tingling feeling in your gut. And I mean, even if it’s housekeeping!

Let’s face it, we all can’t make it to the “top”, so as long as you’re happy, that’s awesome because you are part of the body regardless.

Sure, strive for success, but don’t be bummed if things don’t turn out as YOU planned it. God is the author of this one, so let him do His work!

So remember,

You are loved

You are useful

You are worth living

God absolutely loves you.

And you are part of the body of Christ.

So be happy and do what you love.

There’s more to life than money and material things.

Believe me.

“Yes, the body has many different parts, not just one part. If the foot says, “I am not a part of the body because I am not a hand,” that does not make it any less a part of the body. And if the ear says, “I am not part of the body because I am not an eye,” would that make it any less a part of the body? If the whole body were an eye, how would you hear? Or if your whole body were an ear, how would you smell anything?

All of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it. (‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭12‬:‭14-17, 27‬ NLT)”

Faith.. Have faith!

For about a week and a half I was worried sick.

I knew I shouldn’t have been, but what could I do?

My mom was sick in the hospital getting ready for surgery and I did a great job hiding my emotions or better said, staying strong.

I had to stay strong for my little brother, older one and my mom herself.

I couldn’t show my fear and I’m thankful.

All I had was faith, faith like never before.

I had prayed and prayed for my faith to be strengthened and there it was, God answered my prayers!

He didn’t fail me as he never does.

I was able to stand strong because of the solid foundation he laid for me.

I had faith.

I prayed.

I cried while praying.

I was also filled with joy while praying because I believed all would be well.

I still had a little worry in my heart though.

But that’s okay, doubt is ok.

It’s ok as long and you don’t bottle it up. So let someone know, ask questions and don’t let the doubt squeeze out your faith.

Anyway,

This post is dedicated to my mom, my superwoman that I love more than anything in the world.

As she has always bent backwards for me even when I was doing everything wrong, that’s the same way I would bend as far backwards for her as I can.

I am sooo glad that she has been healed and everything went well because God knows I wouldn’t be able to carry on without her.

So thank God and have faith, He will never fail you! You just have to believe.

Join me in praising God for my mothers life..

HALLELUJAHHHH!!

** I will share her testimony on here in a post to come**

“Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. (‭Matthew‬ ‭7‬:‭7-8‬ NLT)”

Girl Talk (A revised text that I sent to my friend)

I think the mistake many of us girls make is that we try to force our happiness to revolve around a “magical” boyfriend solely because of the “perfect” couples we see in the media.

Not knowing somewhere down the line, that revolution leads to heartbreak.

Especially because BOYS of this day and age tend to be untrustworthy and whatnot (much emphasis on “boys“)

They don’t want what you want. You want comfort and happiness or perfection but they just want soup (as an english teacher of mine would say).

They are moved by testosterone, you are swayed by emotions. They’d do anything to get under your sheets.

Or even if that’s “extreme“, maybe they think they like you but they’re as confused as we are, except we are more emotional.

I’m not trying to bash boys, I’m only proving a point.

Human beings in general should NOT be your source of joy (especially testosterone driven boys).
They won’t always be there for you or with you and you’re basically self destructing.

As I continue to stress, do NOT be oblivious by just focusing on the now. There is more to life than a “mere summer fling”.

Moreover, God should be your source of joy because he is always there and has always been. He should be your rock. He should be your all.

Trust me; if you put God first, your future is and will forever be in His hands. He will let you know when it’s time to “find” a MAN. In fact, He’ll bring that real man to you. (If you’re younger, don’t stress, you have lots of time; it’s growing season). He will be your guide, Just trust in him.

The same goes for boys, control yourselves and focus on God. Look to God.

This is learning season- as my brother Sheriff usually says. Grow in the Word, prepare for your future, put that work in!!

For some this may sound crazy, but you never know until you try. Trust me, I only speak from experience.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. (‭Proverbs‬ ‭3‬:‭5-6‬ NLT)
